Over the past couple years, we’ve had the hard task of spending lots of time at the beach. : ) Okay, I joke… but the beach did become a central theme of our travels, especially as we discovered our love of surfing, and we went from being city dwellers to expert beach-goers. (It’s a hard job, but someone’s gotta do it, right?) A day at the beach is the perfect outing for families — from surfing and swimming to beach combing and sandcastle-building, it’s a place where you can relax and play at the same time. And just being out in nature means that children always play so well without needing much in the way of toys or games.
We are often asked what we pack in our beach bag so I thought I’d share. It has become such a routine task for us that we don’t even have to think about it anymore (we even keep our beach bag half packed and on-hand ready for the beach at any minute!). Here’s what goes into our beach bag:
- Turkish towels because they are thin and take up as little space in your bag as possible (they also dry more quickly and aren’t as heavy when wet!)
- Towel ponchos are also handy for longer beach days
- Sun hats — I love the hats from Shop Boswell, and they’ve just launched an adorable collection of children’s hats! This past year we travelled with Tilley Hats for the kids, which are great because they easily fold up flat to fit in your suitcase (and beach bag).
- Water bottles (it’s best to bring ones that are stainless steel and insulated so your water stays cool)
- Rashies for every child — our favourites are the UPF 50+ rash tops from Canopea — the quality is so good!
- Swimsuit for each child (or spare underwear if they’re already wearing their swimsuit). I love the swimwear from Minnow, Petit Bateau and I love the swim shorts for boys from Beanie & Bear.
- Sun creams (and zinc for surfers) — we keep a nylon zip-pouch in our beach bag which holds all the sun creams, keeping everything organised and easily accessible.
- Portable wireless speaker for music at the beach
- Snacks and fruit for hungry kids — I like to slice up fruit and keep it in a plastic food container to keep sand off the food.
- Umbrella (I know this doesn’t fit in your beach bag, but it’s a beach essential!) — we love ours from Sunday Supply Co.
What other things do you pack in your beach bag? Anything I’m forgetting?
